Teaching Philosophy
I learned from a variety of different teachers with very different teaching styles. Throughout the years, I found myself dividing practice sessions into two parts. The book learning, reading, technical part and the play along with music and “go for it” part.
I spend significant time on sight reading, posture, technique, dynamic control and musicality.
I also believe that a student needs a place to use those things in a practical and fun way. Real world situations that challenge and excite a student are essential to the development process.
So, I do both in my lessons. Although I tune my lessons to specific needs and abilities of the individual student, I use this two-stage model as the foundation for each lesson.
Day 1
The student and I initially sit and come up with a set of reasonable goals and a rough time frame for reaching them. Within that guideline, I use specific exercises and real world playing situations to move towards those goals.
The exercises I choose are selected to work in conjunction with the real world examples. I strive to provide a context for all of the material presented so the student can stay focused and feel a sense of motion and accomplishment, and most of all have fun.
